After a week of watching The Bird Channel, I'm an "empty nester" now.
I did get to witness the first flight of one of the chicks, while its sibling (who had left the nest just minutes earlier) flapped around on the ground below, trying to figure out how to get airborne again.
Originally, there was a third chick. Their sizes varied a lot, probably due to hatching order. I couldn't even see the smallest one until the day after I spotted the first two. A few days later, it disappeared. I don't know what happened, but it clearly didn't survive.
That knowledge made me panicky at first (Can't I DO something?), then sad and shocked, then surprised at my own shock. Did I really think that wild animals would be exempt from losing their babies, too? Of course not. I've just never seen it right on my own patio before.
Rest in peace, little Number Three. Have a good life, Numbers One and Two. Thanks for sharing your childhood with me!

This is so cool. How amazing you got to watch them leave the nest. I would be sad to learn that one was missing and probably dead too. Unfortunately, it happens quite often in the wild.
ReplyDeleteWhile I know that baby animals die all the time in the wild, it still is so shocking and sad when I actually see it happen. So cool that you got to see the other two leave the nest, though. Love the picture!
ReplyDeleteIt's always cool to find nests, even more if you find eggs in them, or babies. Used to have a fern hanging here, and so got a nest of sparrows. Now and then, there'd be deaths- ugh, there's more lives... Awesome for you to experience the moments!
